The Pennington girls' basketball team had an impressive fourth quarter comeback to tie things up in regulation and then fought off some final chances from Stuart Country Day to capture a thriller in overtime, 54-53, and advance to the finals against Loomis Chaffee.

The Stuart Tartans built a 10-point lead early in the fourth frame on a 3-pointer from Nia Melvin (20 points). Trailing 45-35 with 7:05 remaining, the Red Raiders outscored the Tartans 16-6 to knot things up at 51-51 apiece. Diamond Christian (15 points) netted 10 points for the Red Raiders in the frantic final seven minutes including back-to-back treys. Christian scored all three points in overtime to cement the victory. The Tartans had the final shot for the win, but the jumper from 12 feet out grazed the iron as the horn sounded.

The Peddie girls' basketball team was overpowered by Loomis Chaffee, 51-12, in the opening contest of the Tip Off Tournament. The Falcons went into the break down 25-4 and fell victim to a stellar offensive outburst by the Pelicans led by Reilly Campbell (12) and Cassie Hawthorne (10).

Senior Katie Rodriguez scored six points for the Falcons who never found their footing offensively. The Pelicans hot shooting during the middle periods (12 of 22) and lockdown defense made for a difficult concoction that the Falcons could not reverse.

Through most of the first 10 minutes, the Peddie girls' basketball team traded buckets with Stuart Country Day, but the Falcons went cold from the field and saw a four point deficit (14-10) turn into an 18 point advantage for the Tartans at halftime (33-15). The Tartans shook off their slow start and used a 16-3 burst in the second stanza supported by Mary Kathryn Kramli's two 3-pointers.

Sophomore Mya Ademilola and senior Sarah DiLuzio each scored eight points for the Falcons. The Tartans' Nia Melvin scored seven of her game-leading 17 points during the big first-half run.

Pennington repeats as Tip Off champ

Taylor Blunt scored 15 points to lead all scorers as the Red Raiders defeated the Loomis Chaffee School of Windsor, Conn., 62-46, in the Tip Off championship matchup. Tourney MVP Diamond Christian drained eight of her 12 markers in the first 16 minutes.

The Pelicans never threatened the Red Raiders. Pennington led 19-5 after the opening quarter and took a 35-17 advantage into the locker room at intermission. They built the lead on pressure defense and up-tempo offense while shooting 15 of 29 from the floor in the first half. The Pelicans struggled, making just seven of 31 attempts.

Loomis made a mini-run in the third frame, but could not get any closer than 42-31 with 2:31 remaining as Skylar Hanley scored 10 of her 12 points in the push. Leah Johnson neutralized any comeback thoughts by the Pelicans, dominating the paint with eight points, followed by a huge 3-pointer by Erika Makela to give the Red Raiders a 49-32 spread heading into the fourth quarter.
