John Schafer '37 turns 100

Schafer arrived at Peddie in February 1931 as a student of the lower school. He was involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, including The Peddie News, drama club and school band, and was a member of the wrestling and swim teams.

After attending the University of Pennsylvania, Schafer enlisted in the Air Force, where he served from 1942-45. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie presented Schafer with the Distinguished Service Medal for distinguished meritorious service in ground operations during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.

After the war, Schafer followed his father’s legacy in the furniture business. Over his career, he owned and operated six furniture stores. Schafer worked until the age of 92.

The Peddie Chronicle staff caught up with Schafer and his son Ed this summer at Schafer’s home in Hamilton, N.J. For the first time in more than eight decades, Schafer took a look at his original application for admission to Peddie, school report cards and yearbook photos.
