Students develop the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing and are introduced to French culture. We use a workbook and online exercises for grammar, a level I reader. Our workbook introduces basic grammar such as verb tenses, adjective agreement, and sentence structure. Through daily practice the students begin to develop a sense of grammar and style in their communication. The reader is used as vehicle to practice pronunciation, fluidity in reading, and to amass a good, working vocabulary. Discussion in French follows each of the chapters. Culture is introduced through various vocabulary themes. As the year progresses, the emphasis changes and French is the language of the classroom. By the end of the year, students can speak and write about themselves and their immediate environment using simple present, past and future tenses.
