Jazz and Literature

The course will contemplate America’s unique genre of music and the literary tradition reflecting it. We will consider, equally, the course audio selections and readings, and discuss how jazz functions as a backdrop to literary character develop or as an external power shaping protagonist’s choices. We will certainly write traditional literary analyses on the required reading, but we will also survey the history of the music and give considerable time to appreciating recordings. Readings will include but are not limited to the following: Toni Morrison’s Jazz, Sascha Feinstein’s The Jazz Fiction Anthology, Goeff Dyer’s But Beautiful: A Book About Jazz and Ashley Kahn’s Kind of Blue: The Making of the Miles Davis Masterpiece.
