Contemporary Plays and Playwriting
Terms : 1
Grades : 11, 12, PG
This course immerses students in the fundamentals and exciting nature of contemporary playwriting, by examining the dramatic techniques of leading New York playwrights, such as Edward Albee, Suzi-Lori Parks, and Sarah Ruhl. Students will develop their own dramatic voice through regular creative-writing exercises and the subsequent composition of their own one-act play. This year's class will also explore the art of dramatic adaptation, as students will work collaboratively to dramatize three short stories from James Joyce's The Dubliners. Additionally, students will receive instruction from visiting playwrights and professionals from the McCarter Theatre. Lastly, the class will culminate in an exciting dramatic reading of each student's work, brought to life by actors from The Honors Theater Ensemble. This class will feature an interdisciplinary approach with two teachers. Students interested in collaboration, creative engagement, and multi-disciplinary thinking are strongly encouraged.
