How did Taylor Swift evolve from country roots to record-breaking pop sales?  Why is Tupac Shakur such an important figure not only because of his rap career but his political activism?  This course will explore multiple styles of popular music in the United States, including (but not limited to) rock & roll, jazz, country, hip-hop, folk, and electronic music.  Emphasis will be placed on critical listening, discussion, and the development of a deeper musical vocabulary, as well as the connections between the evolution of musical styles and their social and cultural contexts.  This is a music history/appreciation course - there is no performance component.
