Course Description

Spanish IV

Terms: 3
Grades: 10, 11, 12, PG
Prerequisite: Spanish III or Spanish III Honors

An advanced course that builds on the material covered in the previous three levels as students learn how to communicate in an increasingly sophisticated way. Spanish is the only language used by both teacher and students. The course will focus on three important times in the history of Spain: the Islamic al-Andalus, the Spanish empire (focused on the influence of pre-Columbian civilizations) and the Spanish Civil War. Readings, movies and multimedia sources about the major civilizations that shaped the language and culture of Spain and Latin America form the basis of much of the class discussion, and students will write analytical essays. Students are strongly encouraged to explore the diversity of other peoples and cultures in more detail, thus preparing them for their role as global citizens. By the end of the course, students will have had extensive practice speaking, writing and reading Spanish at an advanced level.
