Course Description

Visual Arts Foundations

Terms: 1
Grades: 9

Projects in drawing, collage, painting, and sculpture encourage meaningful self-expression for both the novice and experienced art student. While building technical skills and an understanding of color, composition, and other design fundamentals, students work both from imagination and observation. Longer projects include the creation of a painting, in which students express their personal views surrounding a current topic of social or political concern, and a Family Sculpture, in which they use simple materials to build an abstract representation of family. Image editing software is introduced and employed during the design process. Additionally, all Visual Arts Foundations classes visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art to make studies of artworks through sketches, short essays, and audio responses.
