Targeting of Human Proteins by the COVID-19 Protease 3CLpro

I worked at the Arany Lab at The University of Pennsylvania. I spent the summer learning and doing data analysis for potential protein targets of the COVID-19 protease. Cleavage of structural proteins in cardiomyocytes is a possible explanation for the cardiac complications in COVID-19 patients. The project involved matching of the primary, secondary, and tertiary structures of proteins to the active site of the viral protease. Interestingly, predictions show that cell adhesion proteins (cadherins) have a greater chance of getting cleaved.

The signature experience made me realize that the best part of research is being able to learn something new everyday. Sam Shi ’21
