Modeling Suitable Habitats of the Endangered Giant Pandas Using Remote Sensing
I worked with my classmates and Peddie teachers in the Coding for Conservation Project. I established my own research project where I attempted to use satellite images and code to model suitable habitats for the endangered giant pandas. Through gathering data and information on Google Earth databases, I was able to focus on five factors that impacted the species' habitat: climate, forest cover, elevation, biomes, and predators. After spending time to debug code, I created one classification that combined the five factors' common areas. By the end, I discovered that giant pandas could potentially thrive in Central Asia!
I not only have learned many new and useful skills, but also developed an increasing awareness of the damages the ecosystem faces due to climate change, global warming, and the expanding human population. Melissa Cao ’21
