What's old is new again

You know the story: we finish our labors to begin them anew. This school year, we began our labors anew with a new (but familiar) graphic identity for Peddie, a visual storytelling of our favorite tale.

Ours is a story about history and endurance, creativity and curiosity, community and loyalty. It’s a story about going out into the world fearlessly, and leaving it a better place than we found it.

We tell this story warmly and humbly. We tell it through the people who make up our community, through the accomplishments that make us proud and through the experiences we all share. And we also tell it with symbols that speak in ways that words alone can’t.

Our modern challenge was to convey Peddie’s storied past in a way that also reflects our modern institution. To express Peddie’s spirit and values through a visual identity that is as strong, as cohesive, as unifying as the school itself.

Finimus pariter renovamusque labores. We finish our labors to begin them anew. True to this motto, we’re letting Peddie’s rich history guide us as we move into a bright new future. We also sought guidance from the Peddie community. After all, it’s your story we’re telling. It’s only fair that you should help us tell it.

The seal has been a part of our legacy since it was hand-drawn in 1875. The earnest farmer depicted in the center has served as a symbol, a reminder to generations upon generations of Peddie students that we harvest what we sow, and that we are always growing, always improving and always embracing what the future holds.

It’s an image that resonates. And it’s one that we’ve chosen to recommit to.

But it hasn’t returned alone. In today’s world, the symbol of our institution must appear on websites, on t-shirts, on cell phone cases and in any number of places unimaginable at the time of our school’s founding. We need symbols that are distinctive and easily recognizable. We didn’t have to look hard to find them. Our bold and assertive Peddie wordmark is extracted directly from the seal. The same is true of the Peddie P.

These pieces of our identity cannot be replicated. They were labored over nearly 150 years ago. They are unique to us. Because we believe Peddie — and its story — is as unique as each of our 545 students. It is as unique as each of our 10,123 living alumni worldwide.

Peddie is proud to be moving forward into the future with visual imagery that is as simple and sophisticated — and as true and enduring — as the vision and values that made this school what it is.
