At Peddie, students are encouraged to develop a respect, appreciation, and love for theater. In the classroom we offer freshman Theater Foundations or Freshman Musical, as well as a variety of electives, ranging from Acting to Musical Theater, from Speech and Debate to Playwriting. The sequence culminates in a full-year course, Honors Theater, for which all interested seniors are invited to audition.
The theater curriculum
includes improvisation as well as instruction in different acting techniques and scene study. The goal is to put students at ease as they explore (some for the first time) their talents on stage. Our dynamic and dedicated faculty members help even the most timid students to overcome their inhibitions and deliver a performance of which they are proud.
Each year the arts department presents a fall-term play, a freshmen musical, a winter musical, a spring play and a one-act series performed by the Honors Theater ensemble, as well as two public speaking and acting contests. Students may also choose to work behind the scenes with our full-time technical director and visiting professional designers as stage managers, light and soundboard technicians, and set crew members.
In addition to class field trips, students may hop on the Peddie Culture Bus, which takes regular excursions to the professional theater, in both New York City and Princeton. And every four years, Peddie theater participates in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, the largest arts festival in the world.
