Nikko Lara signs national letter of intent

2/4/2010

Peddie Athletic Director Sue Cabot and head soccer coach Peter McClellan announced today that Nikko Lara has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his education and playing career with the Northeastern University men's soccer program next fall.

"Nikko has been a critical component to our success these past two seasons," said McClellan. "His athleticism and his technical ability separate him from other very good high school players. The combination of these two attributes makes him the best player I have ever coached within a confined space. His first few steps are remarkable and his ability to slow down play with his speed is unique."

Lara's visit to Northeastern in Boston last August ultimately influenced his decision to play for Huskies coach Brian Ainscough. His team ended the 2009 campaign with a 10-8-1 overall record and an 8-2-1 conference mark that was good enough for third in the Colonial Athletic Association.

"When I met the coach I knew that he was one that I could play for," said Lara. "The team is young, graduating three seniors this year. We have our own turf field since they terminated their football program. Finally, the experience that I will gain from taking advantage of their co-op program (Cooperative Education) was a huge factor in my decision."

In addition to his athletic talents on the pitch, Lara has been praised for his involvement in the Peddie community.

"Nikko's teachers have consistently praised his efforts in the classroom," said McClellan. "He has been a wonderful mentor to the underclassmen and his optimism has helped make the campus a happier community.
