The landscape of college admissions has changed dramatically over the past twenty years. Colleges that were selective have in many cases doubled their application totals and become ultra-selective, while colleges that were once considered “safety” schools have become increasingly competitive as well. These changes can result in a great deal of stress, anxiety and mystery for families engaging in the the process of finding the right school. The College Counseling Office at Peddie sees our role as educators who will help lessen the anxiety and demystify the process. In essence, we provide an extension to what our faculty does in the classroom. As we educate students about the college admissions process, we also foster self-awareness so that each student can determine which colleges will be the best fit.
Ultimately, we view this process as student- and parent-driven, but the Peddie College Counseling Office offers our families resources and support. We introduce our students to the latest college counseling technology. Counselors and students meet regularly, and our office is available and accessible for our parents as well. We put a face on what can be a faceless process by connecting students with college representatives. We host college fairs on campus five times a year. A parents’ weekend symposium brings guest speakers in to address such specific concerns as essay writing, financial aid and making the most of the college visit. Happily, at the end of the process, almost all Peddie students attend colleges and universities ranked as most or highly selective.
