Greg Wriede ‘95 enters his 5th season in 2005-06 as the head coach of his alma mater. Since taking over the Peddie program, Wriede has guided his teams to two Easterns Championships, a National Prep School Record in the girls 200 Medley Relay, and over twenty high school All Americans. In 2005 the Peddie girls placed 4th nationally in Swimming World Magazine’s Mythical High School Championship.
In USA Swimming competitions, Peddie Aquatics has produced seventeen US Open Qualifiers, seven Junior National Qualifiers, and five National Qualifiers under Wriede’s tutelage. In addition, his swimmers have placed in the Top 16 National Age Group over thirty times and have set over twenty New Jersey state records.
In international competition, Alexis Jordan represented Barbados and Peddie in 2005 in the 11th World Swimming Championships in Montreal, Canada and the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships (CCCAN) in Santo Domingo, Domican Republic. Jordan took home a silver medal in the 50 Meter Freestyle at the CCCAN.
After graduating from Peddie in 1995, Wriede attended Harvard University, where he was named a multiple NCAA All-American swimmer. In 1998, he was ranked within the top 10 in the United States for the 400 individual medley, and the following year was a member of the United States National Team.
As a coach, Wriede brings diligence, dedication and hard work, which shows in the performance of his athletes. A variety of training activities foster team cohesiveness. “Nothing comes easy,” he tells his swimmers. “If you want it bad enough, you have to be willing to work at it.”
Wriede’s coaching philosophy in many ways parallels the Peddie School’s mission in developing students to reach for levels of achievement they have not attempted before. He believes in success, not only as an athlete but as a quality citizen.
“The lessons learned in the classroom and in the pool will help each athlete reach his or her potential,” Wriede said.
With the program’s student-athletes going on to Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Penn and other top academic institutions, Peddie swimmers are groomed for success.
