Former Falcons Face Off in NCAA Final Four
Former Falcon teammates Wood, Coyle to face each other in NCAA Final Four
For three years as teammates, Phoebe Wood '15 and Kelly Coyle '16 would match their field hockey skills in practice at Peddie. This Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Louisville, the former Falcon teammates will be going head-to-head again when Wood suits up for the No. 10 Franklin & Marshall Diplomats (18-3) and Kelly for the second-ranked Middlebury College Panthers (18-2) on the sport's biggest stage, the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Final Four.
When the brackets were announced, both girls saw a potential path for a reunion as opponents.
"Kelly has remained one of my good friends since high school and we keep in touch often about field hockey and life in general, so playing each other does sometimes come up," said Wood who has seen action in all 21 games at midfield for the Diplomats. "We knew there was a possibility of playing each other after the NCAA brackets came out and I couldn't be more excited to see Kelly in Kentucky."
A starter in 19 of 20 games for the Panthers, Coyle echoed the same feelings about the semifinal clash.
"Being close friends makes our matchup more special," said Coyle. "It will definitely be interesting because we both play in the midfield for our teams and will most likely go up against each other. Obviously, we would both like to advance to the finals, but at the end of the day I know that whoever wins on Friday is going to root for the other one on Sunday."
