Help create the NEW Peddie.org

Peddie.org is being renovated and we would love to hear about your visit. Would you be willing to take a quick survey? (Approx. time to complete: 3 minutes)

We believe that each student has the potential to be an artist, and our rich curriculum includes one- and two-term courses designed to nurture that creativity. Courses include Visual Arts Foundations, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Architecture, and Film & Video. For students in their junior year who seek greater intensity, we offer a year-long immersion in visual arts, A.P. Studio. Some students further develop their artistic passions by participating in the Signature Experience in the Arts, a blend of coursework, field trips, visiting artist workshops, and summer study. In the senior year artists in Honors Studio Art are assigned a semi-private studio space where they experiment broadly with media and message. They design a personal concentration project that culminates in the Honors Art Exhibition in May.

Everyone enrolled in visual arts classes takes an inspirational field trip to such New York museums as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, International Center for Photography, Rubin Museum, New Museum, Dia Beacon, Storm King Arts Center, as well as an assortment of contemporary galleries. Several times a year we host exhibits by professional artists on campus at the Mariboe Gallery and welcome the artists into the classroom for a dialogue and critique.

At the end of each term, all students enrolled in visual arts classes use the Swig Arts Center as an enormous gallery space to exhibit their best artwork. They celebrate with friends, family and faculty at the festive reception on opening night. These vibrant exhibitions reflect our departmental philosophy which encourages students to develop thoughtful, complex ideas and then to hone the technical skills necessary to express these visions. Through slide lectures, critiques, and field trips, we help students to become critical connoisseurs of the art world. The visual arts faculty members are working artists themselves, which offers the Peddie student many mentors upon which to model a creative life of art making.
