Community Involvement

Founded in 1864, Peddie School has been an involved member of the Hightstown-East Windsor community for over 150 years. In recognition of its leadership role, the school won the 2005 Good Neighbor Award from the New Jersey Business and Industry Association for its contribution to the revitalization of downtown Hightstown with the purchase and renovation of the old movie theatre as well as the expansion and renovation of the municipal parking lot. Peddie students perform an average of over 8,000 hours of community service each year, most of which are in the immediate area, including teaching in the ESL program (English as a second language), work at Better Beginnings and Rise: A Community Service Partnership, Meadow Lakes, Greater Goods, New Jersey Seeds, and Trenton Area Soup Kitchens, among others.

Members of our greater community swim with the Peddie Aquatics program, play on the Peddie Golf Course, and participate in summer camps and programs.

Downtown Hightstown revitalization
  • Peddie School demonstrated its commitment to Hightstown’s Downtown Revitalization Project through the purchase of 120 Main Street, a run-down warehouse.  The School invested over $2,000,000 in creating an attractive retail space.
  • The School spent $477,000 reconfiguring and rebuilding the Municipal Parking Lot.  This project was identified as a priority in the Borough Master Plan.  Peddie contracted the work and paid the funds up front, saving the Borough bond interest costs and legal fees.  This project was awarded the New Jersey Business In Industry “Good Neighbor Award”. This project was in lieu of increasing Peddie’s cash donation of $40,000 to a total of $100,000.
  • Beginning in 2009, Peddie school has made a financial commitment of $10,000 per year for four years to Downtown Hightstown, Inc. in support of the Main Street Program. The School has also made an in-kind contribution of office space for Downtown Hightstown, Inc. in 120 Main Street for the same four year period.
  • Peddie School incurred approximately $200,000 in design and construction costs to maintain 169 S. Main St. and restore the façade to its historical appearance at the request of the Borough and the Historical Commission.
Contributions to the local community
  • Peddie School contributed $150,000 toward the construction of the Etra Extension waterline, which significantly improved the town's water pressure capabilities to residents along Etra Rd., including Peddie School and Meadow Lakes.
  • Peddie School makes cash contributions of over $60,000 per year to Hightstown including contributions to the Fire Department and First Aid Squad, for general operating support of the Borough.
Community Service
  • Peddie School hosts a Community Day each year which reaches over 450 community members, primarily economically disadvantaged children and senior citizens.  This year alone, this day netted clothing and sports equipment donations, food donations for a local food bank, 125 turkey dinners delivered to local senior citizen groups,  and accounts for 65 pints of blood donated to the Red Cross.  During the day, student groups traveled to Rise: A Community Service Partnership, Great Goods, St. Anthony’s Food Pantry and the Trenton Rescue Mission with food and clothing.
  • The School hosts and participates with Special Olympics of New Jersey and each Spring hosts a large swim meet and helps coordinate the track meet.
  • In the last fiscal year, Peddie School spent over $600,000 in the local community on goods and services and paid over $300,000 to the Borough in permits and fees relating to construction projects.
General
  • While children of families residing on Peddie's campus attend school in the East Windsor Regional School District, Peddie also admits a number of students who would normally attend public school in that same district. Currently, 24 children of families that reside on the Peddie campus attend classes in the East Windsor Regional School District. This year, a total of 27 students from the Hightstown-East Windsor community are enrolled at Peddie, and the school awarded those students over $291,000 in financial aid.
